Balanced Rock at Garden of the Gods

Balanced Rock stands in the southern part of Garden of the Gods, a free city park in Colorado Springs. The rock looks as if a large block rests on a small base. The city lists Balanced Rock, together with the Gateway Rocks, among the formations that you can photograph from the parking lots, so you do not need a long hike.

This is an independent guide, not the website of the city or the visitor center. Rules and hours below are the figures for 2026 and can change. Check signs on site.

How Balanced Rock formed

Wind and water did the shaping, over a very long time.

The park operator's history page explains the shape in simple terms. Softer layers at the base wore away faster than the harder rock above. What remained is the block that now looks precariously balanced. The rock belongs to the Fountain Formation, which is 320 to 300 million years old. It formed from sand, gravel and mud eroded from the Ancestral Rockies. Iron oxide gives the sandstone its red color.

The rock layers tilted upward from about 70 million years ago, and erosion later carved the ridges and valleys of the park. The layered stone is easy to see in the close-up photo on this page. For the other named rocks and a longer geology guide, see Kissing Camels and the other famous rocks.

Balanced Rock photo tips

Good photos come from the lot and the official paths.

Shoot from the lot and marked paths

The city names this rock as one you can photograph from the parking area. Stay on the lot and the official paths. Do not step off the path for a better angle, and do not climb on the rock.

Pick your time of day

The park opens at 5 a.m., so early light is possible. The time of sunrise depends on the date, so check it for your day. Park hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. from 1 May to 31 October and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. from 1 November to 30 April.

Add Steamboat Rock

Steamboat Rock and Balanced Rock appear together in a photo from the road. Steamboat Rock is listed on the city map. Do not treat it as a rock to climb.

Keep the road clear

The speed limit is 20 mph (about 32 km/h). Do not stop or park in bike lanes or walking lanes to take a picture. Use the lot instead.

Getting to Balanced Rock

Drive in from the roundabout on 30th Street and follow the signs to the southern part of the park. The Balanced Rock area has its own lot. The city's event notices call it Lot 15 and list it as a free outer lot. The parking page explains the other lots, the overflow lot and the summer shuttle.

A city park map from 2022 also shows a Balanced Rock parking area. The layout may have changed since that edition, so follow the signs. If the lot is full, do not park in bike lanes. Come back later, or start early.

Hours for the visitor center and the film are on the visitor center page.

Rules at the rock

The same park rules apply here as everywhere.

Stay on the official paths and take nothing from the park. Dogs must be on a leash, and their waste must be picked up. Drones are banned. Under the city's burn restrictions, in effect since 17 February 2026, smoking outdoors and recreational fires are banned in city parks. Technical climbing needs a free annual city permit and is allowed only in line with the park rules, so see rock climbing. A well-known name is not a reason to climb. Walking routes through the park are on the trails page.
